So I am off to the luminaire in Kilburn tonight to see Comets on Fire (Acid kings of blistering sky-ripped pyschedelic rock and roll according to the website - I believe a little over egged but hey it sounds good).

Anyway that is not what this post is about. So I am nosy and start having a look at what else they have on. That is when I cam accross Mumford and Sons who are launching there new EP at a party there on Monday. Quite simple they sounds fucking ace from the couple of songs I hve managed to get hold on.

Breezy building songs washing layer upon layer of spring like melodies with beautful harmonies I need to here some more. Unfortunately the gig is sold out so I am going to make do with the EP and sit on it for a bit. Anyway check ot the couple of the tracks they have on their myspace here:

and check out this small taster I have found for your lucky dogs as well.

Wimbledon on the telly, sun in the sky and mumford on the stereo - great day.

Metal Kicks Ass

Couldn’t say it better myself: there is only one rule of metal - play it FUCKING loud!

A quickie with the cool kids

The cool kids are pretty cool. There seem to be a lot of kids around at the moment (well at least there is the Black Kids as well) but of all the kids I reckon these ae the coolest.

88 is new my best new song filling the void I have for rhythmical party hip hop in a Tribe Called Quest stylee with a fresh twist. Not since Spank Rock got crunked and had a shocker opening for the Beasties in Brixton have I been more excited about an up and coming hip hop group.

Anyway for those who want to check these guys out look no further than here where the entire cool kids winterfresh mix tape can be found.

cheers for the hook up jada1212

So I was keen. In fact I was very keen. But sometimes that is not enough. This is something I have learnt now.

It started with a trip away for easter with the Girlfriend. Pack a few cds for the journey including my trusty new copy of ‘Get Awkward’

The drive was going well until we somewhere outside of London and then it came; ‘do you think just maybe this sounds a bit like that kid that won school of rock on TV?’

God damn it you are right.

And that was that.

How was last night’s gig? Reliance on the old album for getting the crowd going was clear with the possible exception of ‘Food Fight’ - how I wish I had taken some doughnuts. They motored through their back catalogue with scant concern for such things as verse or chorus. And the sound was pretty poo.

And it kept hitting me over and over…..

lil’ chris

And thats where it started to unravel.

The guitarist looks a bit like Richard Fleischman - Blam!

The bassist looks like a cross between Napoleon Dynamite and Dangermouse - Thwack!

The drummer is a new addition and looks like a mate of mine who runs a pub - soft tap on the arm!

Jemina occasionally dances like she is in Madness - knockout blow!

I was going to follow this post up with a lil’ chris video to emphasise the point. But that would be a step too far.

I definitely prefer rock chicks to men in their pants. For me this has been a simple choice. However as man in their pants go then Girl Talk is probably up their. I remember this gig as being crazy as hell.

Venue resembling Butlins holiday camp. Check.

Terrible beer on draft. Check.

Stage invasion before act is on stage. Check.

Two Scottish dudes singing over electro and inviting people to sit in a special chair. Check.

Incredibly pissed dude that thought he was mates with everyone and fell out of the special chair. Check.

I think you get the idea. Check out a sample here.

For some reason I think it looks like its in slow motion - definitely not as cool as I remember. Also check out my my mate with the blond hair in the middle of the screen at the beginning. I like to think of him as a conductor to the carnage.

Anyway I am a massive fan of Girl Talk. Night Ripper is a great album for getting on when you are in party mode and was left on loop long after we had bothered to care on NYE. Actually as a result of that there are a few mixes on there I can probabaly never listen to again. But Tiny Dancer combined with Notorious BIG? LOVE THAT.

Big shout out to Upset! The Rhythm for sorting it out and keeping prices low. These guys have interesting stuff of (Black Dice and Japanther to name but a few have been on recently) and its well worth joining the mailing list.

BYOP (Yeah You Know Me)

Hot damn I love a rock chick. Jemina Jemina Jemina where have you been all my life – the fun we could have had……. Get Awkward is the new album of Be Your Own Pet and it is released tomorrow in the UK and Tuesday in the states.

I have been checking it out on their myspace

http://www.myspace.com/beyourownpetmusic and I wish it was tomorrow already. Those who have heard their self titled debut will know how unrelentless this music is.One song in – this is killer bring it on!!!

Two songs in – yeah I’m an independent motherfucker!!

Nine songs in – I need a sit down and a soft drink, this is intense.

Early sounds tell me more of the same is on its way. They are wheeling their way through Ireland, Scotland and the UK in the next couple of weeks. I am on for the Scala gig on April 1st – what a great start to the month it should be and tix were only £10. Whose turn is it the band to bite a bouncer??

Here is some footage of the Nashville quartet laying it down at SXSW this past week.

Get the album and peroxide you hair now.

First posts are tough man. You want to sound like you know your shit but you also don’t want to scare people off with some scary ass references to old stuff that no one has a clue about. What to choose? Some evil US noise band or some Scandanavian pinky pop or both?

All that is going to have to wait as in the end it had to be something to closer to home and that something is Dizzee. One of the most exciting gigs I have seen in a long time, he killed it at Koko back in June and his new album ‘Maths and English’ is really worth the wait and the hype. Stand out tracks for me are the flow and style of ‘Bubbles,’ the spitfire verses of ‘Where da G’s?’ and the pure party dancefloor killer of ‘Pussyhole.’

It’s an album to crank the volume as high as you possibly can and rock streets half cut trying to keep up with fast paced tempo and spitting as many lyrics as you can remember.

Check this vid out as a small taster:

For all of those who don’t know Dizzee just announced some new UK dates:

Leeds Uni Academy - Nov 2

Oxford Academy - Nov 3

Bristol Academy - Nov 6

Southampton Uni - Nov 8

London Astoria - Nov 9

If y’all live anywhere near any of these places then no excuses.
